Now is the Time for a New Fire Station in Tierrasanta and Updated Recreational Facilities

By: Tom Keliinoi – TK – Tierrasanta Foundation President

As one of San Diego's oldest planned communities, the need to update Tierrasanta's aging public infrastructure is well past due. Public facilities include a fire station, recreation center, community pool, and library, each providing services to the approximately 30,000 residents that call Tierrasanta home.

The Tierrasanta Foundation is working on two important initiatives, and we need your help! By contacting your elected representatives listed below, you will bring attention to the need for a new fire station and much-needed updates to our recreational facilities that have not been a funding priority for the City of San Diego for too many years.

Fire Station 39

Home to a rotating crew of 24 first responders amongst three divisions, Tierrasanta Fire Station 39 entered service nearly 50 years ago.

As one of the few original fire stations in San Diego, Station 39 has four crew members simultaneously sharing a small house of approximately 1000 square feet, while two Medic crew members share an old single-wide trailer in the back lot of the station. The spotlight for a modern facility upgrade has been a significant focus of the Tierrasanta Foundation for the past ten years through our Fire Station Initiative. Beginning with Station 39, the Foundation has contributed nearly $100,000 in money and services to the City of San Diego through facility upgrades and improvements. Our Fire Station Initiative seeks to improve city-owned fire station facilities, primarily providing drought-tolerant architecture enhancements and site beautification.

These improvements preserved the need for water use during extensive droughts while reducing the need for crews saddled with the added burden of maintaining city landscaping that receives no funding or maintenance, decreasing fire crew readiness and training time.

Through donations and private funding, the Tierrasanta Foundation has delivered services to the City of San Diego fire stations that include Tierrasanta (39), Lincoln Park (12), San Ysidro (29), and Hillcrest (5).

While improvements to stations outside Tierrasanta have been to more modern facilities, Tierrasanta has yet to make the list for an upgraded fire station.

June 2024 Tierrasanta Canyon Fire

Station 39 beautification began in 2015

Fire & Rescue crews must constantly train to prepare for the call when someone is in trouble and needs life-saving or property-protecting help. Yet Tierrasanta Fire Station 39 lacks adequate modern facilities that accommodate mandated equipment for training, leaving crews to train in a highly carcinogenic and cramped working environment. Career firefighters experience increased cancer mortality rates due to long-term exposure to carcinogens when fighting everything from car and industrial fires to house and wildfires. The intense demands for these men and women contribute to a higher rate of heart disease among men.

Among the benefits of a new fire station is increased garage space to house a utility rig, which veteran crew members say would improve 911 response during seasonal highs from Mission Trails Regional Park calls, served by Station 39.

Tierrasanta is the Island of San Diego communities, surrounded by Mission Trails Regional Park and plenty of open-space trails in between. The threat of wildfire is no stranger to residents, who dodged potential devastating damages due to a June encampment fire in a canyon off of Antigua and Gabacho. Station 39 crews were the first of four engines, two brush engines, and two helicopters that expertly contained damages to two acres. We were lucky these resources were immediately available that day, or the outcome would have been catastrophic.

Fix-the-Rec

Our Fix-the-Rec Initiative addresses the need to improve the use and access to our community pool and recreation center, which is well beyond the need for repairs, maintenance, and updates. You can find out more about these initiatives by visiting www.tierrasantafoundation.org/tf-initiatives.

Supervisor Joel Anderson's Community Coffee Town Hall

Author: Shannon Chuang

On Thursday, September 26, 2024, County Supervisor Joel Anderson hosted a Community Coffee town hall to discuss the issues that are most important to the communities of Tierrasanta and Serra Mesa. With over one hundred constituents in attendance, the event was held at Mission Trails Regional Park and co-hosted by the Tierrasanta Community Council. The town hall began with a check presentation by Supervisor Joel Anderson to the San Diego Bicycle Club, who received a grant of $10,000 from the Supervisor’s office to fund youth bicycle safety events.

Supervisor Anderson spoke to attendees in a question-and-answer format, taking questions ranging from fire safety and homelessness, to potholes and housing. He also expressed his dedication to making sure that County government works for his constituents and connected them directly to his staff to work on their issues. Additionally, Jennifer Morrissey of the Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation spoke about the organization’s commitment to community engagement and conservation of the environment.

Dean, a constituent who attended the event felt that Supervisor Anderson was very responsive to the needs of Tierrasanta and Serra Mesa. “It was very informative when the Supervisor addressed issues facing our communities, such as homelessness,” he said.

Thursday’s Community Coffee Town Hall demonstrated the impactful work being done at the County level by Supervisor Anderson. The event provided a purposeful space for open dialogue about issues affecting Tierrasanta and Serra Mesa and gave constituents an opportunity to connect with their locally elected representative. “These town halls are my favorite part of the job,” said Supervisor Anderson. “It was inspiring to see so many members of our community come and make their voices heard,” he added.

This lively town hall event highlights Supervisor Anderson’s commitment to community engagement and addressing constituent needs. For more information about the County services offered by Supervisor Anderson’s office, or to get involved, constituents are encouraged to reach out on the Supervisor’s website at supervisorjoelanderson.com/contact or by calling his office at (619) 219-2470.

Hungry Helper Food Pantry

Girl Scouts create a free food pantry for the community.

Author: Zoe Silvestro and Lilah Prazen

Girl Scouts Zoe Slivestro and Lilah Prazen of Troop 4849 created a little free food pantry called the Hungry Helper for their Silver Award project. The Silver Award project is a girl scout achievement you get by giving back to the community in a sustainable way. An issue that they hope to address with the project is that people in their community can’t always afford to buy food.

They created a way for families and people to get food for free by installing a free food pantry at their local Tierrasanta Lutheran Church located at 11240 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. Zoe and Lilah worked together to design and build the pantry.

The pantry is available 24 hours a day and is sustained by the community giving donations. They hung up flyers around Tierrasanta to build awareness.

If you need food or would like to donate food, please visit the Hungry Helper located in the parking lot of Tierrasanta Lutheran Church. Please place food donations directly into the Hungry Helper. Everyone is welcome!

Honeybee Themed Electric Boxes

Painted electric boxes on La Morada
Author: Sarah Babini

I recently finished my first ever art project, which was to paint two SDGE electrical boxes on La Morada, near El Comal. They are a honeybee theme and are now dripping with honey and honeycomb with bees and ladybugs all over. I drive by the boxes everyday and for awhile had noticed one of the boxes had chipped paint and the remnants of graffiti. I figured I could make them look better and beautify my neighborhood at the same time. I contacted SDGE to get permission, submitted a proposal which was just a simple one-page form, and after SDGE gave approval I got to work. It has been hot lately, so I did most of my painting after 4pm. It was prime time to meet all the local dog walkers and chat with neighbors as they followed my painting progress. The before and after pictures are below.
