A newsletter for the Tierrasanta community

May 17th, 2024

From the President of Tierrasanta Foundation

The Tierrasanta Foundation, founded in 2008, has a simple mission: do stuff that benefits and improves the lives of the citizens of Tierrasanta. We do that with a PIE - Projects, Initiatives, & Events. (I admit, I love acronyms).

Our annual 5K & Fun Run event is planned this year around Halloween. It's a hoot as it has a chip-timed run for the serious runners and the Fun part, which involves kids, dogs, costumes, and a beer garden. I must mention the beer garden.

You can also read about the Fix the Rec Initiative, designed to improve, and extend the availability of our Community Recreation Center and Pool facilities. It's exciting to see many of our residents donating to this initiative! We've raised nearly $5,000, with plans for more improvements as we hit the summer season.

Finally, is our Fire station Initiative, recurring since 2014. This initiative intends to improve our first responders' living and working conditions, emphasizing the long game – a new fire station for Tierrasanta. Station 39 is one of the oldest, smallest, and unhealthy fire stations in the City of San Diego. This month, the Tierrasanta Foundation delivered the crews a Bluetooth speaker and workout bike. The city does not provide everything firefighters need to stay healthy & fit.

We topped this month off with new lawn care equipment for the drought-tolerant landscaping the Foundation provided in 2017.

"Fix the Rec" Projects Underway

Thanks to strong local and County support, the Tierrasanta Foundation has initiated two new infrastructure projects at the Tierrasanta Pool. With paint purchased from community donations, painting of the stained pool façade has begun and the improvement is rather substantial. Shown in the photo below, Dr. Hani Shatila presents a check for the new paint to Kathy Castello (Aquatic Division Area Manager). And in the second photo, you can see the beautiful results.

The second project involves replacing the sun-damaged and nearly-opaque windows between the pool building and the pool itself. As Kathy noted, “the two largest windows are in the pool offices where it’s imperative for staff to have a constant view of the swimming pool in the event of an emergency. Currently, staff must look through an adjacent doorway to see outside.” Again, a picture is worth a thousand words.

With financial support from a County of San Diego Community Enhancement grant, the Tierrasanta Recreation Council, fundraising, and private sources, we are expanding our impact on the Tierrasanta community. We are working with management at the Tierrasanta Rec Center to identify potential projects there, including new gym scoreboards, chairs and tables for senior activities, playground equipment, a new gym divider, etc. These will be announced soon.

We are excited about this program and want to encourage Tierrasantans to offer suggestions as well as contributions of time or money. If you would like to join this effort, please contact Arne Knudsen at aknudsen@tierrasantafoundation.org or at 858-775-8751 Community support for these efforts will allow us to complete these projects and initiate new ones. If you can help, please make checks payable to “Tierrasanta Foundation” and mail to 10601-G Tierrasanta Blvd, Box 406, San Diego, CA  92124. The Tierrasanta Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization - donations are tax deductible. You may also use Venmo (@TierrasantaFoundation).

TJWC & Guests enjoy Koi Zen Wine Tasting

Member Kathy Ober waits with guests to hear the winning raffle numbers

The Tierrasanta Junior Women’s Club hosted a Wine Tasting fundraiser at Koi Zen Cellars on Sunday, April 28th. Friends and neighbors joined in the fun, sharing stories and laughs, while enjoying the hors d’oeuvres and a few glasses of their preferred wine selection!

Guests were also invited to support the organization via a raffle. Baskets, filled with items donated by members and the community, were tempting to all!

The TJWC thanks the Committee, chaired by Jodi Masumoto, and members for their support. Above all, thanks to Koi Zen management and staff who made the day “extra fun”! This was the third event hosted at the Cellars and each one was better than the last!

TJWC at Princess Project

Dijana Ristic Checking the gowns

Recently, the Tierrasanta Junior Women’s Club was introduced to a “new” cause that really hit a soft spot.

The Princess Project, a non-profit that provides free dresses and accessories to high school teens with a “no questions” Prom dress give-away program, made a presentation at a monthly TJWC meeting and, members were hooked! They agreed to support the group financially and conduct a dress donation drive in T-Town. In April, to further experience the work of the Princess Project, several members volunteered to assist with the distribution of prom dresses over several weekends, from the store-front in Mission Valley.

Without exception, the volunteers enjoyed the experience and noted that they most enjoyed seeing the young ladies as they found their “dream” gown and modeled, complete with big smiles, for all!

The Princess Project, San Diego Chapter, has been helping teens since 2009 find their perfect prom dress. Over the past 10 years they have given away over 10,000 dresses.

Are You Prepared for Wildfires?

May's arrival not only brings warmer weather, but also the beginning of Wildfire Preparedness Month. With San Diego County being especially susceptible to wildfires, Supervisor Joel Anderson is encouraging residents to prepare with the help of his Wildfire Preparedness Resource list.

San Diego County faces significant wildfire risks due to our region’s dry conditions and powerful winds. These factors create an environment where even the slightest spark could quickly turn into a life-threatening emergency. That is why understanding how to respond to potential wildfires is crucial to you and your loved ones’ safety. Wildfires can arise anytime and can spread quickly, sometimes giving those in its path just minutes or less to evacuate.

Investing in fire safety and fire prevention remains one of Supervisor Anderson’s main priorities. Since taking office in 2021, Supervisor Anderson has worked tirelessly to bolster our County’s wildfire preparedness efforts, including securing a $16 million firefighting helicopter that can fight fires at night, identifying new locations for firefighting resources like heli-hydrants and helo-pods necessary for aerial firefighting, and co-authoring an initiative to allow farmers to return to evacuated areas to tend for animals and crops when safe to do so.

“Having to evacuate from wildfires several times myself, I’ve learned that preparing ahead of time makes all the difference in a disaster situation when seconds matter,” Anderson emphasized. “San Diego County is eternally thankful to our firefighters and first responders who work around the clock to protect our communities.”

Awareness and preparedness are key in minimizing wildfire impact. Ways that you can prepare for wildfires include:

  • Building an emergency supply kit

  • Making a family disaster plan

  • Maintaining defensible space around your property

Promptly following evacuation orders, practicing fire safety measures, and staying informed through reliable channels not only honors the bravery of our first responders but also contribute to collective efforts to keep our communities safe.

To view Supervisor Anderson’s Wildfire Preparedness Resource list, visit www.supervisorjoelanderson.com/wildfire.

County residents are also encouraged to sign up for emergency phone notifications sharing urgent evacuation notices and other warnings at www.AlertSanDiego.org.

If you have further inquiries on resources available, want to share your opinion, or need assistance with a County matter, contact Supervisor Anderson's office at www.supervisorjoelanderson.com/contact or by calling (619) 219-2470.
