Pickleball is coming to the Tierrasanta Rec Center!
After completing Phase 1 of the Tierrasanta Foundation's "Fix the Rec" initiative in May at the Tierrasanta Pool, we announced plans for an ambitious set of projects at the Rec Center. With generous donations from the public, the Tierrasanta Tennis Club, the County of San Diego, the (legacy) Recreation Council, and local residents Lee and Allen Rachel, we are pleased to announce that all of the targeted improvements are underway!
Drinking Fountains: New fountains have been delivered and are awaiting installation. Located in the main building, they will accommodate large water bottles and will replace both the upstairs and downstairs fountains.
Pergola Repairs: New posts, to replace the rotted 6x6" supports, have been delivered. A work order has been issued for the repair.
Playground Equipment: The playground at the Rec Center has a number of rockers with broken springs or missing parts. In addition, a panel on one of the play structures is blocked with plywood. Three new rockers and a new panel were installed on December 4.
Basketball/Pickleball Courts: After navigating the permitting process with the City, a contract has been issued for resurfacing the outdoor basketball courts. This work is scheduled to begin on Dec 16 and should be completed before Christmas. Not only will the resurfacing improve the courts for basketball, but the courts will be striped for pickleball, representing the first public pickleball courts in Tierrasanta. Schedules and logistics will be announced soon.

Meet the Fleet at 32nd St with NJROTC
Author: CHHS NJROTC Public Affairs Team
Canyon Hills NJROTC cadets recently embarked on an extraordinary field trip to the “Meet the Fleet” event at Naval Base San Diego, offering them a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of naval operations. The event, held at 32nd Street, allowed cadets to board active naval vessels, interact with military personnel, and gain a firsthand glimpse into life in the armed forces.
The highlight of the trip was the chance to explore three prominent naval ships: the USS Montgomery (LCS-8), a littoral combat ship designed for nearshore operations; the USS Tripoli (LHA-7), an amphibious assault ship; and the USS Pinckney (DDG-91), a guided-missile destroyer. Each vessel showcased the Navy’s cutting-edge technology and provided insight into the day-to-day operations and challenges faced by sailors at sea.
Beyond the ship tours, cadets had the chance to walk through a bustling vendor area where they could enjoy local food and interact with representatives from various military and civilian organizations. The event also hosted students from elementary schools, middle schools, and other high schools, creating a diverse and engaging environment for all attendees.
This experience not only deepened the cadets’ understanding of naval operations but also fostered a stronger sense of community and camaraderie. Engaging directly with active-duty service members inspired a deeper respect for their dedication and sacrifice. It also offered cadets valuable opportunities to network and share their experiences with peers and mentors.
Overall, “Meet the Fleet” was an unforgettable day of learning, interaction, and inspiration, reinforcing the mission of NJROTC to prepare young leaders with a profound appreciation for military service and its role in safeguarding the nation.
