“Fix the Rec” Phase 2 – Pickle Ball at the Tierrasanta Rec Center
In August, the Tierrasanta Foundation will begin Phase 2 of the “Fix the Rec” program. Working with San Diego Parks and Rec staff, we have obtained estimates to address a number of challenges at the Tierrasanta Rec Center. Although it will be a stretch, we hope to initiate resurfacing and restriping of the outdoor basketball courts, to benefit the many residents who play basketball there every day, and also locals looking for regulation pickle ball courts. As this is an expensive job, we will, once again, be soliciting financial support from the Community.
In addition, we hope to also fund replacement of broken equipment at the playground, fixes to the pergola structure adjacent to the Rec Center Office, new drinking fountains that will accommodate water bottles.
We are excited about this Fix the Rec and want to encourage Tierrasantans to offer suggestions as well as contributions of time or money. If you would like to join this effort, please contact Arne Knudsen at aknudsen@tierrasantafoundation.org or at 858-775-8751 Community support for these efforts will allow us to complete these projects and initiate new ones. If you can help, please make checks payable to “Tierrasanta Foundation” and mail to 10601-G Tierrasanta Blvd, Box 406, San Diego, CA 92124. The Tierrasanta Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization - donations are tax deductible. You may also use Venmo (@TierrasantaFoundation).
Volunteering at the Tierrasanta Pool
With City budgets tight, the Tierrasanta Community Pool has faced staffing shortages that have impacted operating hours and programs. Recognizing the need for additional experienced staff, Sonja Steinbrech, a Tierrasanta resident, has begun coaching swim team and teaching swim lessons at the pool – as a Volunteer. She is of the belief that all kids should learn to swim, especially since we live in a “water city.” Swimming is not only essential, but it is fun for all ages and abilities!
Sonja’s experience in swimming is extensive. Swimming has been a big part of her life – beginning in childhood, through high school and college club teams, and today, as a San Diego Master’s swimmer. She has taught at all levels. When she approached Stephen Yoo, Pool Manager III of the Tierrasanta Community Pool, he directed her to the City of San Diego’s volunteer screening process and she immediately enrolled in a Water Safety Instructor class. “She hasn’t skipped a beat and is one of my best Swim Instructors,” Stephen says.
Sonja adds, “We have this amazing facility right here in Tierrasanta that allows for public access. Local residents should take advantage of their pool and its programs”. Sonja’s children, Sal and Ellie attend Tierrasanta Elementary School and participate in swim lessons, swim team, and Junior Guards - all programs offered through the City of San Diego. In Sonja’s spare time, she enjoys spending quality time with her family camping at the beach with their Boston Terrier, Rhona!

TJWC Scholarship Reception
Submitted by Joyce Muinos
On June 20, 2024, the Tierrasanta Junior Women’s club hosted a Scholarship Reception for the winners of the TJWC 2024 Canyon Hills High School Scholarship winners at the home of Amy Hall. This annual event gives the TJWC members an opportunity to meet and get to know the recipients of the year’s awards.
The evening featured hors d’oeuvres and beverages, hosted by the Juniors, a delicious “Congratulations Graduates” cake and the presentation of the awards to the grads.
Each student and her guests, were introduced by Chairperson and President, Joyce Muinos who included a short excerpt from the Scholarship application describing the community service the awardee performed during her years at CHHS and what it meant to her and the impact it has had on her life.
Ms. Adalyn Martin Del Campo, accompanied by her Aunt Norma Guzman, was awarded the Janice Trantham Memorial Award. Janice’s husband, Mr. Mick Trantham was on-hand to make the presentation. Adalyn has stayed busy volunteering at Tierrasanta Community events, the Oktoberfest, TierraFest and Monster Mash. She realized that small acts of kindness can significantly impact another’s experience. Volunteering taught her skills such as empathy, responsibility and how to be proactive, driving her to serve and make an impact, no matter how small!
Ms. Janalina Noriega, who attended with her mom, Karen Fisher and sisters Chloe and Clair was awarded the Janet Leeder Memorial Scholarship by Mr. Phil Leeder, son of Janet. Janalina was active with the Chavista Club and participated in many service events. “Community service was beyond lending a helping hand. It is not just about volunteering” she said. “It’s about building connections, fostering empathy and creating a sense of belonging!”
Ms. Haiven Smith was awarded the 2nd Janice Trantham Memorial Scholarship by Mr. Trantham. Her mother, Jamie Haiven accompanied her daughter. Haiven’s volunteering has been with the Canyon Hills Theatre Department, working concessions, ticket sales, etc. She was also Co-editor in Chief of the junior Year book and Editor in Chief her senior year. She learned the importance of communication and leadership skills and how to take charge and ask for help when she needed it. She learned that working with a group, asking for help, and tackling a problem together can build a strong team!
A TJWC 2024 Scholarship was awarded to Ms. Chloe Wedge who brought her mom, Kristen. Chloe’s high school career was filled with team sports, events, practice, and games. She served as Captain of Varsity Soccer and LaCross and Captain for JV Field Hockey, among other things. She coached youth soccer and she was a camp counselor. Her experiences as counselor led her to discover that she has a passion for helping children!
The Juniors enjoyed meeting these young ladies and wishes them nothing but success and some fun as they pursue their chosen degrees! They also look forward to meeting Luna Santana and Sydney Brown at the August General Meeting. Both were unable to attend the reception.
Volunteers Needed

Children’s Clothing for Military Families
The Military Outreach Committee of Tierrasanta Lutheran Church has been holding a Children’s Clothing Fair (CCF) providing donated gently used clothing to military families for the last 10 years. During that time over 1000 families have received “new” clothes for their growing children. The Tierrasanta community has offered continued support of this ministry, and we encourage you to continue that effort.
The next CCF is on Thursday, September 26, 2024. Time: 10:00 – 12:00 pm; Place: Murphy Canyon Chapel, 3200 Santo Rd.
This event provides a venue where the Tierrasanta/Murphy Canyon/Serra Mesa communities can donate clothing that their children have outgrown and make those items available to local military families for their growing children. So, please check your children’s and grandchildren’s closets for items in clean and good condition. We are unable to accept toys, books, or bedding.
Donation boxes will be at the Tierrasanta Lutheran Church and Murphy Canyon Chapel on September 8th and 9th respectively. Please start collecting clean, gently used children’s clothing now for donating to this needed resource in support of our military families.
Contact Jessie Wallace 619-446-9146 or Beckie Ryan 619-204-4596 for any questions or concerns. Thank you for your generous support.
